A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Doug graduated from The George Washington University and studied acting in New York. Barr’s first film roll was a lead in the ABC television pilot, Semi Tough. This early success convinced him to move to Los Angeles where he worked continuously in film, television, miniseries and stage productions.
Among his many starring credits are a two-year stint on Designing Women for CBS, an Emmy nomination for multiple programs of Two on the Town and over a hundred episodes of the ABC hit series The Fall Guy, in which he played Lee Major’s sidekick. His first produced screenwriting effort was an episode of The Wizard in 1987, which was followed by numerous screenplays including Rough Trade, Every body’s Somebody’s Fool, Blindsight, The Hit, Fathom, Fade to Black, Perfect Cover, Temptation, Tunnel 3 Down, Bandit Hunters and many other well received scripts.
The multi-talented Barr’s directorial debut came with the production of his original screenplay, Dead Badge, a film starring Academy Award winner, Olympia Dukakis and M. Emmet Walsh followed by the critically acclaimed Conundrum, a Showtime Feature Presentation, which he also wrote and directed. Over the past few years he has directed multiple episodes of a Fox network series and continues to direct and write highly rated network and cable television films.
Barr is married to artist Clare Kirkconnell, resides in Northern California’s wine country, and has a son, Wilson.
